Painting and other stuff

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

So about a month and a half ago, Dan put wood laminate flooring in the second upstairs bedroom. It still needs a bit of wood stuff to be put in the cracks but overall it is done and looks good. So since that room is empty because of the new floor, we are planning to paint it. So this weekend we went out and looked at paint samples. We are going to go ahead and do the room in the color scheme we want for our future nursery since we don’t want to have to repaint the room in another year or two. So we have a Winnie the Pooh theme semi planned. We aren’t using the pre-done Disney ones because they are a bit too pastel for my tastes, but I think we’ve come up with a good color combo, though we will be using between 5 and 7 different colors based on a couple of various conditions.

I also want to get some pictures for the room. I found a gorgeous one that is exactly what I wanted for the room. It is $700, so we’re waiting till we go to Disney, I am hoping to find something more in the $50 to 100 range, $700 is just a bit more then I’m willing to spend on my future nursery, no matter how perfect the painting.

After that is done we’re going to redo the dog’s room. We are doing it in a finding nemo theme, fortunately for that one we only need 3 or 4 colors of paint which makes it easier (and two of those colors will be the small paint cans). Then we’ll hang up the various nemo pictures we have and rearrange his room so it will look nice.

In other news not much else going on around here. We went to the gamestore the other day and bought a couple new games that all look fun. I’m thinking of going out to get the civ4 expansion later this week, but other then that not much else going on.

New Job for Dan?

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

So Dan is sort of looking to change positions. He likes where he is now, but the salary is a bit lacking, especially for the job he is doing and the area we are in. So I found him a couple of listings on Craig’s list (and he found a couple more), he worked last week some on his resume and cover letter and sent them out Sunday evening for one of the listings. So last night (Monday afternoon) he got an email responce back asking him in for an interview. So it looks like they like his resume, this means we need to get his jacket dry cleaned and find his nice slacks so he has something to wear for the interview.

He is probably going to send out a few more resume’s to a couple of the other places we found, but it was nice to see him get an interview within a day. The place that he has the interview at is about 5 minutes from the house, it is in our town and in our zip code as well (our town has 3 zip codes) so it is really close, which is nice. Hopefully it will work out and he’ll get a nice raise. He won’t mind staying where he is now, but he isn’t getting paid anywhere near enough to make that a viable option at the moment, so hopefully we’ll find something for him that he’ll enjoy doing and he’ll get a nice raise out of it too.

On my job front, my job working for his company is going fine. I am also going to be tutoring my Math Student starting at the end of August, which will be nice since that normally brings in between $20 and 40 a week, sometimes as much as 60, plus I really enjoy tutoring my tutoree she is a great person to hang out with and teach math too.

I’m still looking for a decent online University program as well, though I’m not looking to hard I should probably pick up the pace a bit, but I’m not really motivated at the moment. I would like to get my Bachlor’s so I’ll probably start looking again in a few week since when I find something I’m not starting before January anyways.

Other then that not much else is going on here, we leave in under a month now for our trip to Disney for our 5th aniversery. That will be nice, going to see my cousin and her new husband probably as well as a friend who lives in the area, should definately be entertaining.

More Latin

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

Since I know everyone loves hearing about me learning Latin, and even if they don’t well it is my blog so if you are going to read it you are going to hear about me learning Latin so deal, here is an update on what’s I’ve been learning. I am now in chapter 2. It is going pretty well, though I slacked a bit last week or I would be working on chapter 3 by now. However, since I am teaching myself I can slack all I want. Anyways my biggest problem at the moment is that I don’t have an answer key, so I can’t tell if I am translating correctly, since Dan took 4 years or so of Latin in High School he is able to help some, but still it would be nice sometimes to have the key. Especially when I have to translate from English back into Latin. The Latin to English isn’t normally to bad, it is the reserve that I keep wondering if I am doing right or not.

Oh well, I like the Latin text I am using and it explains things fairly well especialy with adding in the workbook and a grammar type book someone wrote to go along with it. So I think I am doing decently except for the whole wishing I had an answer key.

Latin

Friday, July 7th, 2006

So a couple of months ago (almost a year now I guess) I bought some books to start learning Latin. With uni and all I never really did much with them. So I have restarted my Latin study again. I’m most of the way through the first chapter at this point in time. Just one more thing to translate in the book and then some of the workbook exercises to do. I’m enjoying it and since it is a dead language if my pronounciation is a bit off it won’t hurt anyone which is nice. Hopefully I’ll have a decent handle on Latin by next year and then I can start on my next project which is learning ancient Greek.

Dang apparently Americans don’t read?

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Found the following here.

58% of the US adult population never reads another book after high school.

42% of college graduates never read another book.

80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year.

70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.

Source

This scares me. We go to the bookstore 2 or 3 times a month normally, though occationally we go 2 or 3 months without visiting a bookstore if finances are tight. However, we buy between 50 and 200 new books a year so even with the couple of months off we are still buying a ton of books. I can’t even imagine not ever reading another book? What would I do instead? Of course I don’t watch TV so I may have more time then your average American. Though I would think my computer time would take up some of that.

I do have to say if I don’t read at least 1 book a night I feel deprieved and there are days when I read 5 or 6 books in day. Just the thought of not reading another books gives me shivers. I just can’t imagine not going to the bookstore and picking up some new books and authors to imense myself in their world.

Weird hair effect (Or why the heck is half my hair white overnight?)

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

Okay so I was looking in the mirror today not something I do compulsively mind you, but I do glance at my reflection when washing my hands and such, or when doing my hair to go out somewhere (other then basic places, ie out with friends). So what do I notice but a white hair. Okay not a huge deal I occationally get a white hair or two, no problem just pull it out and it is gone.

Well normally that is all there is to it, until I noticed another one, and another one, and wait is that another one? I counted at least 40 white hairs tonight (okay I pulled out at least 40 white hairs tonight, maybe I am a bit vain, but damn it I am 28 no white hair till I’m at least 35). Where the heck did they all come from? I swear they were not there on Saturday when I actually spent time fixing my hair up decently (since we were going over to a friends house and all). In fact I am almost willing to swear they weren’t there yesterday, so overnight I suddenly ended up with over 40 white hairs, what is up with that? Anyone else ever have spontaneous overnight white hairs?

All I’m hoping is it is a one time thing and I’m not really going white, because dang it I am only 28 and then I would have to find a real hairdresser so I can dye it, because I refuse to have white hair at 28.
